Jones Day Partner Regan J. Fay Honored By CIPLA As Its Distinguished Member Of The Year 2010

Cleveland, Ohio (I-Newswire) May 2, 2011 - Regan J. Fay, recently retired Jones Day partner and past president and longtime member of the Cleveland Intellectual Property Law Association (CIPLA), was honored at its Annual Meeting and Dinner on April 29, 2011, with the “Distinguished Member of the Year Award 2010.” Begun in 2009, Mr. Fay is only the second person to receive this honor.

The event was held at the Natural History Museum and was attended by CIPLA’s current President, Mr. Jon Wood, Chief Intellectual Property Counsel, Bridgestone Americas, Inc., members of CIPLA’s board, current and next year’s elected officers, as well as members of the intellectual property law community of Northeast Ohio. CIPLA’s membership numbers in excess of 400 and encompasses practitioners from Akron, Canton and Cleveland.

Mr. Fay has practiced as a patent examiner, agent and attorney for over 40 years. After graduating from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (M.I.T.) with a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemical Engineering in 1970, he accepted a position as a U.S. Patent and Trademark Office examiner and began studying law at night at the George Washington University School of Law, graduating Order of the Coif in 1974.

Prior to graduating, Mr. Fay commenced a clerkship with Judge Jack R. Miller at the U.S. Court of Customs and Patent Appeals (now known as the Federal Circuit Court of Appeals). And upon completion of his clerkship, he accepted a position at Yount & Tarolli, a patent firm in Cleveland, Ohio. There he represented such well-known clients as Mr. Coffee and Oglebay Norton, handling both patent prosecution and litigation matters.

Mr. Fay’s career at Jones Day spanned 28 years. He practiced in the firm’s Intellectual Property Group, handling matters of patent prosecution and patent and trademark litigation, specializing in polymer chemistry and related chemical processes. Mr. Fay has tried and argued cases on both the state and federal levels. Moreover, he has conducted numerous audits of intellectual property procedures and patent/intellectual property portfolios on behalf of his clients.

Throughout his distinguished legal career, Mr. Fay represented a host of Fortune 500 companies, including, but not limited to, Bridgestone/Firestone, Cooper Tire, Eastman Chemical, General Electric, Hamilton Beach, Lubrizol, and Sherwin-Williams. Mr. Fay has litigated over 30 significant patent cases and over 15 trademark and/or trade secret cases, including the well-known trademark case involving The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum.

Among his notable professional achievements are inclusions in the following listings: The Best Lawyers in America 1995-2011; Ohio Superlawyers 2004-05, 2007-2009; An International Who’s Who of Patent Lawyers; The International Who’s Who of Business Lawyers; Chambers USA (“Leader in their Field”) 2007-2010; and IP Law & Business (“Best Lawyers in Intellectual Property Law”) 2008-2010.

For many years, Mr. Fay taught a course in patent and trademark law at Case Western Reserve University’s School of Law. He has written several articles and has spoken or presented at numerous seminars. Mr. Fay has well over a dozen ADR engagements, serving as mediator in over half. He has served as an expert witness in cases involving antitrust, bankruptcy and patent issues. Mr. Fay is a member of the Northern District of Ohio’s Federal Court Panel for Alternative Dispute Resolution, and he plans to pursue more of these opportunities in retirement.
