The recognition came at the 7th Annual Salute to Patriotism Gala, highlighted by the presentation of plaques commemorating the construction of the memorial that began with the groundbreaking ceremony on May 7, 1989 and ended with the dedication ceremony on May 7, 1995 with then former Governor Christie Todd Whitman in attendance.
