(I-Newswire) December 29, 2009 - On January 22, 2010, the College for Creative Studies in Detroit, MI, will host a reception for the opening of an alumni exhibition titled 'reVIEW: Alumni Selections by Syd Mead.' Mead, an industrial designer best known for his vehicle designs in films such as Aliens, and Blade Runner, chose work submitted by CCS alumni. Detroit artist John Azoni, a graduate of CCS in 2007, has been selected to exhibit his painting titled "Pastries" in the show.

Azoni began his studies at the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) in Baltimore, MD, in 2003, where he painted mostly portraits and figurative work. Transitioning back CCS in his hometown of Detroit, MI, shortly thereafter, Azoni honed in on abstraction, painting large scale, brightly-colored abstract oil paintings. In 2006 he traveled to Aix en Provence, France where he studied art alongside 11 other artists, and developed a more conceptual style working mostly in installation art using found objects. Upon his return to Detroit, Azoni finished up his studies at CCS, graduating with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in 2007.

Azoni now lives and works in Detroit, employed by a large nonprofit, and continues to exhibit and sell his work. "Pastries" is a large painting from Azoni's series of food paintings depicting sugary foods - ice cream sandwiches, a large eclair, a slice of cake, and miscellaneous berries and ice cream - emerging from a background of aggressively-painted green and mint hues.

"Pastries" is a significant representation of the direction of Azoni's recent work, stemming from memories of growing up watching the Food Network with his father, an aspiring gourmet Italian cook.

The opening reception for 'reVIEW' will be held January 22, 2010 from 5-8 p.m. at Center Galleries, located on CCS's campus at 201 E. Kirby, Detroit, MI 48202.
