Island Sports Physical Therapy Seeks Donations for its Community Food and Toy Drives

Giving Back to the Community That They Have Served for Over 25 Years

(I-Newswire) November 21, 2009 - East Northport, NY – November 19, 2009 – When they learned that a number of families in their own community had fallen on hard times and needed assistance during the holiday season, the staff at Island Sports Physical Therapy and the Training Zone in East Northport sprang into action. They decided to make these families the beneficiaries of their annual food drive and initiated a toy drive as well. They set up a spacious area at their facility to receive large quantities of canned and boxed food items and toys for children of all ages. Then they started spreading the word that they are seeking donations from patients, local residents and merchants who care.

According to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul there are 130 families in the Northport-East Northport, Commack and Greenlawn area who do not have the wherewithal to celebrate the holidays this year because of lack of food and/or presents for the children. The economic downturn has affected nearly everyone on Long Island, but it is evident that some have suffered more than others. “Job losses, foreclosures and severe tightening of credit have left some families financially devastated,” says physical therapist Eric Lawrence, director of the East Northport facility. “It can happen to any one of us. That’s why it is so important that we do whatever we can to help each other during these trying times, especially in our own community.”

Though they have collected food for the holidays, pet food for shelter animals and monetary donations for breast cancer research in the past, the staff admits that seeking contributions for their neighbors adds a measure of poignancy. If you’re fortunate enough to have your home, your job or business and food on the table they ask that you show your gratitude by giving generously to those who are less fortunate.

Non-perishable food items and grocery store gift cards can be dropped off at Island Sports Physical Therapy, 1937 Jericho Turnpike (at Elwood Road) from now until December 31st. New and unwrapped toys can be donated until December 11th. Drop-off hours are Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 7:30am-8:30pm; Friday from 7:30am-7:30pm; and Saturday and Sunday from
8am-1pm. As food pantries on Long Island run perilously low according to recent articles in Newsday, we can help replenish them by giving as much as we can. All quantities of food items will be gratefully accepted. Visit www.islandsportspt.com to get directions.
