(I-Newswire) February 19, 2010 - Carpentry is a precise science. Exact measurements and cuts are needed to make independent artist website sure that all the pieces fit together just right. There is a definite need for precision. If the carpenter is off by just a little then a wall could collapse. In the case of a failure there are two types of carpenters: one who would blame his tools and one who would take the fault himself. The carpenter who blames his tool is not a good professional. True that the tools used play a big role in construction, but the saw does not cut by itself. It needs human direction. A good carpenter takes the blame. Regardless of the tools it all comes back to the decision and work that the carpenter does with the tools available to him. Just like a carpenter, a musician cannot blame his tools.

I have heard many a musician complain about their equipment or recording setup. They say Oh if only I had a better guitar or if I could only get exposure some recording time in a professional studio, then I would sound great. The tools do not make the musician, his or her talent does. John Darnielle of Mountain Goats fame did more with an acoustic guitar and a boom box than many a professional recording independent artist at a major label. If a person cannot write a decent song or melody then the entire professional equipment is not going to help them make a hit.

The key to a successful independent artist is successful thinking. The number one thing that a musician needs is honesty. They have to know their strengths and weaknesses. If you know you cannot sing, then do not! No shame in that at all. It is respectable to know where your talents lie. Nothing is worse than a musician who makes up excuses for their ability.

If anything I think that lower quality equipment can actually help a musician. Rare pieces of equipment often give a band a unique sound. The Walkmen, for example, use an old piano; a totally unique piece with a super tinny sound which has become one of the bands trademark sounds.

An instrument can be used to promote a group or music business. It can create a buzz: have you heard the band with the hundred year old flugelhorn horn??? While it may be construed as a little gimmicky, but a unique piece of equipment can be the perfect foothold for a group.

There is also a certain allure to a band that has old junky instruments. A good song played seems even more amazing when a band is using nothing more than saws. That may be a little extreme, but the fact remains that uniqueness and talent is more important than quality of equipment or recording quality. Do not feel limited. Your only limit really is your own imagination.
