IEye Retina IPhone App: The New Look Of Medical School

IEye Retina uses the iPhone to teach medical students to recognize eye diseases with an ophthalmoscope.

San Diego, California (I-Newswire) May 14, 2011 - “iEye Retina,” an app to teach students to recognize eye diseases with an ophthalmoscope, was released earlier this week. An ophthalmoscope is the handheld device that doctors use to look into the eyes. A proper ophthalmoscope exam in a doctor’s office can diagnose the three leading causes of blindness before they cause visual impairment. Unfortunately, the majority of medical students and young doctors do not receive an adequate level of training on how to use an ophthalmoscope. iEye Retina seeks to change this by using the iPhone as a medium for medical education. The app, iEye Retina, uses a rapid-quiz format to make students aware of how common eye diseases appear through the lens of an ophthalmoscope. In essence, iEye Retina has embraced the simple idea that a picture is worth a thousand words.

iEye Retina was created by Michael “Fuj” Fujinaka and Alan Gardner, the same team that developed the popular medical app, “iMurmur: Your Guide to Heart Sounds.” Fujinaka, a 26 year old medical student at U.C. San Diego, and Gardner, an M.I.T. graduate, released iEye Retina with the hope that it will help the new generation of doctors become competent and confident with the ophthalmoscope so they can care for and protect their patients’ vision. With the elderly population on the rise, health care professionals need to be more knowledgeable and seasoned than ever. iEye Retina proposes that there is no better way to ensure ophthalmoscope expertise, than combining medical school with a trendy iPhone application. Will iEye Retina pave the way for a new, more enjoyable and efficient standard of medical school education? The world will be watching...
