IASP Encourages Bloggers And Others To Write About Suicide Prevention For World Suicide Prevention Day

The International Association for Suicide Prevention Association (IASP) is encouraging bloggers and others to help increase suicide prevention awareness for World Suicide Prevention Day on September 10th by writing about the topic.

The International Association for Suicide Prevention (IASP) and the World Health Organization (WHO) co-sponsor World Suicide Prevention Day every year on September 10th. The theme of this 10th anniversary event is "Suicide Prevention Across the Globe: Strengthening Protective Factors and Instilling Hope."

According to the WHO, suicide is one of the leading causes of death in the world. Approximately one million people worldwide die by suicide each year. This corresponds to one death by suicide every 40 seconds. The number of lives lost each year through suicide exceeds the number of deaths due to homicide and war combined. These staggering figures do not include suicide attempts which may be up to 20 times the number of deaths by suicide, which works out to be one attempt every 1.5 seconds.

Once again, the IASP is encouraging bloggers and others to write about suicide, suicide prevention and World Suicide Prevention Day in order to help create worldwide suicide prevention awareness.

IASP has also prepared a selection of tools that bloggers can use in the preparation of blogs and articles. These include a:

1. World Suicide Prevention Day Brochure that describes this year's theme and suggests priorities for suicide prevention with a focus on protective factors.

2. Listing of World Suicide Prevention Day Suggested Activities

3. World Suicide Prevention Day Banners in various Languages

4. World Suicide Facts and Figures

5. Listing of selected evidence-based suicide risk and protective factors research

These resources can be found on the official World Suicide Prevention Day website at www.iasp.info/wspd

It is anticipated that World Suicide Prevention Day will be observed this year in well over 50 countries.
