(I-Newswire) October 7, 2010 - Home Instead Senior Care – Meridian, Idaho a non-medical in home care service, locally owned by Elizabeth Britton has partnered with Portico Pharmacy to provide a one day event about five diseases which are currently preventable with immunization, that are especially serious for those 65 and over.
It’s that time of year, we see the pharmacy signs popping up on the sidewalks all – for flu shots and shingles and other vaccines – how do you know which vaccination shots you should pay attention to? The constant influx of information about the latest studies vaccination effectiveness, the avalanche of information can be confusing. One thing is certain: It is vital to understand how your individual circumstances may make some immunizations necessary and some optional or un-necessary. There are five diseases which are currently preventable with immunization, that are especially serious for those 65 and over.
• Diphtheria is a respiratory disease that causes a thick covering in the back of the throat. It starts with a sore throat and can lead to breathing problems, paralysis, and heart failure. If untreated can cause airway obstruction, coma or death.
• Herpes Zoster (shingles) is a painful skin rash, often with blisters, caused by the same virus that causes chicken pox. If you have had chicken pox, you CAN get shingles, and it most commonly occurs in people 50 and over.
• Influenza (flu) is a contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses which change every year. Each year the Center for Disease Control projects which strains of the flu are expected to be the most prevalent and they develop a vaccine for that season. The 2010-2011 flu vaccine will protect against H1N1, an H3N2 virus, and an influenza B virus. It is recommended to get flu shots in October and mid-November.
• Pneumococcus (pneumonia) is the most common form of infection occurring outside of a hospital in the U.S. It is responsible for over 6,000 deaths each year-- the highest number for any vaccine-preventable disease. It can take many different forms including Pneumococcal meningitis, associated with a very high mortality rate
• Tetanus (lockjaw) a disease of the nervous system caused by bacteria which enters the body through a break in the skin -- a cut, scratch, puncture wound. It is a serious disease and results in death in about 1 out of 10 cases.

All of us can be susceptible to getting the flu, what we need to know and be mindful of is:
Seniors are especially susceptible to flu complications, which can be fatal. You must always check with your doctor before receiving any vaccination, and not all insurance companies cover all vaccines. You should check with your insurance company to see what you’re covered for.

Home Instead Senior Care has partnered with Portico Pharmacy in Meridian and in support of this news segment we are offering: Immunization Day, Friday, October 15th from 9am-5pm at Portico Pharmacy 3355 Louise in Meridian, ID. Services offered during immunization day include:
