Harrison College announced today that the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC) has granted accreditation to the Associate Degree in Nursing program offered at the college’s Indianapolis East campus.

Indianapolis (I-Newswire) April 7, 2011 - INDIANAPOLIS – Harrison College announced today that the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC) has granted accreditation to the Associate Degree in Nursing program offered at the college’s Indianapolis East campus. NLNAC, considered the gold standard in nursing accreditation, accredits colleges and universities across all of higher education.

“Earning the associate nursing program accreditation is important for our graduates,” Gary McGee, President of Harrison College’s Indianapolis East campus, said. “It’s a stamp of approval from the nation’s highest accrediting body for nursing programs, and signals to the health care community that our graduates are well trained and qualified for the open positions at hospitals, doctor’s offices, and nursing homes.”

Harrison College has offered the associate nursing program at its Indianapolis East campus since September 2007. The college was granted candidacy status by NLNAC in Spring of 2010. Once a program enters candidacy status, it has two years to complete the process. Harrison College completed the process and was granted accreditation in just one year.

“The Harrison College School of Health Sciences was established to help fill the need for nurses in communities across the state,” according to Dennis Trinkle, Provost and Chief Academic Officer at Harrison College. “Even during the economic downturn, the health care industry has continued to grow in Indiana and across the nation. Most experts predict that the shortage of nurses will significantly increase in the near future as baby boomers retire from the health care industry, and begin to require more health care services of their own.”

Harrison College’s Indianapolis East campus, located at 8150 Brookville Road, has graduated 53 students from the associate nursing program, and currently has 62 students enrolled in the program. There are a limited number of openings for new students who want to enroll in the quarter beginning September 2011.

Graduates of Harrison College’s associate nursing program earn an Associate of Science degree in Nursing (A.S.N.), and become Registered Nurses after successfully completing the NCLEX exam. While many choose to enter the workforce at that point, others choose to continue their education and earn a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing (B.S.N.). Harrison College also offers the B.S. degree at its Indianapolis East campus.
