Half of American Adults Will Be Obese by 2030, Say Researchers

Report projects health care related costs to reach $2.7 trillion.

Washington Depot, CT (I-Newswire) November 20, 2012 - A recent report by the Trust for America's Health and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation predicts that half of American adults will be obese by 2030. Obesity is associated with many modern chronic diseases and poor health conditions combined with rising healthcare costs.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that almost 36 percent of adults and 17 percent of children ages 2-19 are currently obese. Adult obesity rates have more than doubled from since 1980 and have more than tripled among children. The recent report projects that by 2030 all states will at least a 44 percent obesity rate with more than a dozen over 60 percent. It projects that the incidence of diabetes could increase over 400 percent while cases of chronic heart disease and stroke would rise over 500 percent. This would push projected healthcare related costs to $2.7 trillion.

"The cost of healthcare in America is already very high and presents one of the greatest fiscal challenges our country is facing," say boomer generation health experts Dian Griesel, Ph.D., and Tom Griesel, authors of the new books TurboCharged: Accelerate Your Fat Burning Metabolism, Get Lean Fast and Leave Diet and Exercise Rules in the Dust (April 2011, BSH) and The TurboCharged Mind (January 2012, BSH). "If we ever hope to balance our budget, this trend needs to be reversed."

"People need to take responsibility for their own health and the health of their children," add the Griesels. "A big part of the obesity epidemic is a result of bad information and lifestyle guidance. Modern diet and exercise advice is not working. People must be individually motivated to follow the road to better health."
