Hundreds of Global Customers Sign With Sun Microsystems in Fiscal 4th Quarter

(2005-07-28) Sun Microsystems, Inc.

Sun Microsystems, Inc. (Nasdaq: SUNW) signed up hundreds of new customers while deepening relationships with existing customers, reporting solid progress for fiscal year 2005. Sun saw significant growth in the financial services, education and energy sectors, wooing diverse new customers, from one of the largest banks in Greece, to leading colleges like the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, to energy services companies like Center Point Energy and NewEnergy Associates.

"This was a tremendously successful quarter for Sun across the board. In particular, Solaris 10 adoption continues to skyrocket, many new customers flocked to Sun's servers, momentum continues to grow for our Java developer and enterprise software offerings, and interest in our storage solutions has never been higher," said Jonathan Schwartz, Sun's president and chief operating officer. "Customers are responding positively to our existing family of products and are excited about the broadened capabilities delivered by our strategic acquisitions."

Recent customers worldwide choosing Sun include:

Alpha Bank

With 450 branches, Alpha Bank is the second largest bank in Greece. Alpha Bank has been using Sun's technology for several years and chose Sun again when it recently decided to embark on upgrading its Reuters data feeds for enhanced real-time trading data and analysis. NewEnergy Associates

NewEnergy Associates, a Siemens Company, provides software, energy business solutions, and industry expertise to more than 200 clients throughout the world. The company helps customers meet the largest challenges in strategic and financial planning, energy market and transmission analysis, energy trading, risk management, as well as retail and wholesale energy market operations. NewEnergy's datacenter has grown rapidly with the advent of Monte-Carlo analysis and grid computing. The heat created by the large numbers of servers is an expensive and restrictive condition. The company turned to Sun Microsystems for help and purchased Sun Fire V20z and V40z Opteron processor-based servers, Solaris 10, and Java technology. The Sun solution helps NewEnergy establish a thorough grid-computing architecture, run Oracle databases with large memory requirements and conduct faster risk analysis, which previously required overnight computations. The heat performance of the Sun Fire server with AMD's Opteron-based processors is 30% better than competing alternatives, and even more so when the reduced wattage is factored for the heat generated by the uninterruptible power supply (UPS) to run the servers. Furthermore, NewEnergy prefers Solaris over Linux, due to Dynamic Tracing (Dtrace) and Solaris backward compatibility with old binary versions.

Pennsylvania State University

Pennsylvania State University has had a 15-year relationship with Sun Microsystems. The research computing group runs various engineering, mathematical, and scientific calculations in areas such as computational physics, chemistry, weather predictions, bioinformatics, aerospace engineering and geosciences. This new system will also afford Truition the flexibility to grow according to demand without significant technology acquisition costs.

University of Auckland, New Zealand

The University of Auckland has signed a contract with Sun Microsystems to upgrade its mission-critical application servers, estimating that the move will cut 35 per cent to 50 per cent of its current operations costs. The upgrade, scheduled for the second half of 2005, will see the university replace its two existing Sun Fire 15K servers with two Sun Fire E25K servers running Solaris 10. The Sun Fire servers provide the platform that runs the university's student administration, human resources and financial software. The decision to upgrade its Sun hardware infrastructure was made after the university examined its future computing needs, which will include a major move into grid computing. "We initially bought the Sun Fire 15K servers because we wanted enterprise-class server infrastructure to deliver reliable and consistent service to the university's PeopleSoft applications. At the time, Sun had the best profile for that," said Steve Saunders, chief technology officer at the University of Auckland. "This time, we decided to go through a competitive and rigorous tender to see if anything had changed. We found that Sun was still offering the best solution and we estimate we will save 35 to 50% of our current costs by moving to the new platform."

University of Nevada, Las Vegas

The University of Nevada, Las Vegas, chose Sun and iForce partner, The Root Group, to provide the infrastructure and services for its WebCT course management system -- which will be utilized to deliver traditional and distance education programs -- and its Oracle data warehouse solution. Western Libraries will deploy 450 Sun Ray 170 Ultra-Thin Client workstations for use by the 29,000 students and 1,164 faculty members in the seven research libraries across campus. This will provide new functionality for all library users as well as increased reliability, faster response time and a better student experience. This renewed commitment to Sun included two Sun Fire V890 and two Sun Fire V240 servers to enhance the existing library information services and to support the migration to Sun servers.

University of Queensland, Australia

The University of Queensland (UQ) is one of Australia's premier learning and research institutions. It is the largest and oldest university in Queensland and has more than 30,000 students. Due to growing needs, UQ needed to replace two Sun Enterprise 10000 systems purchased more than five years ago. It chose two Sun Fire E25K systems to provide a platform for future expansion. It chose these systems for increased flexibility, ease of management and reliability.
