Los Angeles’ largest indoor rock climbing gym initiates a community-based climbing league for children 5-18 years who are interested in climbing as an individual and team sport.
Los Angeles, CA – February 3, 2008 – Indoor rock climbing is one of the fastest-growing sports in the United States with two national competition-based organizations at the helm, the US Climbing Association (USAC) and American Bouldering Series (ABS). Focused on young athletes, both organizations offer competitive opportunities for bouldering and top-rope climbers to compete in a friendly, healthy and stimulating environment.
Deanna Quesada, owner and operator of Beach City Rocks Indoor Rock Climbing Gym in Los Angeles, California created the Southbay Youth Rock Climbing League in response to the overwhelming demand for a league–type organization at the youth level. Says Quesada, “We looked at organizations like the AYSO and created a non-profit climbing league that follows in the same spirit. We are building a league that sponsors children, creates community among the climbers and parents while opening the doors for kids to compete throughout Southern California and other states such as Nevada, Arizona and Colorado.”
Beach City Rocks is home of the three time regional championship team, The Stone Monkeys. Consisting of over twenty climbers ranging in ages from 5 to 18, many of the team members have competed in national and world championship competitions in the US, South America and Europe. Quesada continues, “One of the most important aspects of creating a non-profit climbing league is our ability to call on our corporate and family foundations to help us broaden our reach into communities whose families wouldn’t consider climbing because of the expense. With our non-profit status, we are able to accept donations for climbing sponsorships, travel funds, on-going education and awareness of the sport.”
The Southbay Youth Rock Climbing League (SYRCL) was established in 2007. The SYRCL is a non-profit organization that is dedicated to the education and safety of indoor rock climbing as a competitive sport, including top rope and bouldering techniques for boys and girls 5 to 18 years of age. The SYRCL serves all of southern California and is headquartered in Hawthorne, California.
