Island Hospital commences Spine Fellowship 2008 season
Malaysia (Press Release) January 15, 2008 -- Fellowship program training for the 2008 year at the Island Hospital Spine Centre, Georgetown, Penang, Malaysia, shall commence shortly after the Chinese Lunar New Year Festival in February.
Dr Kim-Soon Oh, Director for the Centre, stated that unlike the 2007 academic year, this batch shall include surgeons from China and India. Previously, fellows came from India and from local faculties in Malaysia. The program is designed to provide exposure to the many facets of spine treatment ranging from rehabilitation, ergonomics and medication to surgery. Fellows shall be rotated through clinical attachments with Neurology and Interventional Radiology besides the mainstay of Spine Surgery. The 6-month attachments include research activity and usually end with the candidate attending a major overseas spine meeting.
Dr Oh expressed thanks to Gloxo Corporation and Johnson & Johnson DePuy Spine for supporting the fellowship financially and materially.
"With no-obligation tags attached to the sponsorship of these candidates, these companies have displayed professionalism in their practice," said Dr Oh. "There should be no coercion nor commercial obligation in medicine."
