Giving Tuesday: The Importance of Donating

The holidays are a time for being thankful for what we have, for holiday shopping, for family, and for delicious foods. But it should also be a time to remember those who have less than us, and the organizations working to help them.

The holidays are a time for being thankful for what we have, for holiday shopping, for family, and for delicious foods. But it should also be a time to remember those who have less than us, and the organizations working to help them.

Giving Tuesday is a day of donating to charitable and non-profit causes. Founded in September 2012, the unofficial holiday urges individuals and companies alike to donate online around the world to non-profit organizations. This year, the 2nd annual Giving Tuesday is on December 3rd, just after Cyber Monday and Black Friday, two days devoted to heavy shopping and sales. It strives to make a national day for donating, much like Black Friday for deals, so that millions will make an effort to donate each year during the holiday season. According to Giving Tuesday's website, more than 50 million people were involved and campaigned to spread the word in 2012, with several organizations seeing an approximate 50% increase in their donations.

The importance of donating cannot be stressed enough. Millions are in poverty this Thanksgiving and Christmas, including over 400,000 young children in foster care who won't be spending the holidays with family. The work of various non-profits helps aid these people in need, as well as other causes such as economic development and medicine. These non-profit organizations depend on the support and generosity of donors to run their operations and help those in need, thus Giving Tuesday is a tremendous help to meet their goals.

Giving Tuesday is also a celebration of good will and altruism. While many are busy picking out the right gifts and looking for the best deals, it is easy to forget that thousands of people in Texas are unable to afford food, let alone gadgets and toys. Some people go without clean water or proper healthcare, and thousands of children awaiting adoption have an especially difficult time during the holiday season. After being thankful for all we have, it is a good idea to take a moment and realize that many do not have the same luxuries. Giving back to non-profit organizations will help those in need and help continue the celebration of strengthening our community.

With the amount of attention Giving Tuesday has received, as well as the work of its numerous partners, charities are expecting double the support from last year. After bountiful Thanksgiving eating, followed by lots of shopping, Giving Tuesday hopes that the next day will be recognized as the day to donate. Become part of something truly special this year, and donate to a good cause on Giving Tuesday, December 3rd.
