Photographers Robb Helfrick and James Randklev have both been photographing the Georgia landscape for over a decade, and found the state to be nothing short of spectacular.
“It was love at first sight as they say,” said Randklev. “Georgia is truly a state to experience first-hand for its friendly hospitality, its rich history and its awe inspiring landscapes.”
Come explore the Peach State with them in Farcountry’s newest release: Georgia Unforgettable.
“I started a personal quest to see all of Georgia’s State Parks and Historic Sites,” said Helfrick of his career in Georgia, “and I quickly found places I would return to over and over again.”
While building their portfolios, the photographers each had unique experiences and challenges across the state.
“There are always challenges when you’re trying to photograph a location, but sometimes that presents unique opportunities for creativity and adventure,” said Helfrick.
He recalls photographing the Windsor Hotel in Americus. The property owner arranged for a fire truck to give Helfrick an elevated view of his subject.
“They then proceeded to have Main Street shut down in both directions—at 5 in the afternoon no less—so I could get my shot,” recalls the photographer. “That’s typical Southern hospitality!”
For Helfrick, aerial shots are one of the most exciting aspects of photography.
“Shooting aerials from helicopters has always been a challenge and a thrill,” he said. “Especially when the door is taken off on my side and there is nothing between me and the subject I’m shooting far below. Shooting from the air over coastal areas has always been very exciting!”
Helfrick says that his favorite place to shoot in Georgia is Savannah.
“The special feel of the city with its landscaped squares and abundant history just speaks volumes to me,” he said. “I love to photograph there—especially in the spring—and as I walk the through the historic district I often find myself hoping that I’m fortunate enough to live on one of its quiet squares one day.”
For James Randklev, Georgia’s unique landscapes were true inspiration.
“I was seduced by its incredible natural beauty,” said Randklev of his experience photographing the state.
A professional photographer for 40 years, Randklev has traveled to almost every state during his career.
“We as Americans are blessed to have such diversity in one country,” said Randklev. “I found the Southeast, in particular Georgia, to have an amazing landscape to photograph. Though photography was a challenge with seasonal changes and unpredictable weather, I was rewarded with indelible images that define just how magnificent this state is.”
Randklev’s favorite photograph was the one he captured while visiting Minnehaha Falls in the north Georgia Mountains.
“This little known pristine falls defines what Georgia is all about,” he said. “I felt humbled just visiting it once found, and had one of those rare moments when I could not set up my camera until I visually and spiritually soaked in its beauty for myself.”
Rich in history, landscape, and southern hospitality, Georgia is a state that is truly unforgettable.
