Freedom Fest Brings San Diegans Together to Fight Human Trafficking Through Art, Music, and Entertainment

San Diego's Generate Hope is hosting a major event October 23rd to bring attention to human trafficking. Freedom Fest brings together local artists, bands, and performers to support this cause. Open to the public.

San Diego (I-Newswire) October 19, 2010 - Human trafficking exists. There are slaves right now in San Diego, yet no one wants to talk about it; no one wants to recognize this as an intense local problem, but when the FBI names this city as the 8th largest contributor to human trafficking in the country, it is time to pay attention.

San Diego has strong abolitionist seeds, with several organizations rooting themselves here. These groups, founded and run by trafficking survivors and religious organizations, work daily to end human trafficking, but in order to make a real difference, the general public must become aware and involved. Nikki Junker, Founder and Executive Director of one such organization, With More Than Purpose, agrees, saying, “When we come together, we can change the world in ways no one ever thought possible.”

Because anti-human trafficking activists know not everyone can or wants to deal with the dark horrors of modern day slavery, they have joined forces to bring the realities of trafficking to the general public in a comfortable way - through entertainment. Hosted by rehabilitation program and house, Generate Hope, and supported by a number of abolitionist groups, Freedom Fest comes to Point Loma Nazarene University’s Greek Amphitheater October 23rd.

Freedom Fest will bring bands, entertainers, and information to the community. Local bands Good Morning Milo, Will Shine, Go Project, and Walking Water Band will perform alongside Rock Steady Hip Hop and Island Praise Hula Team. Awareness will be a major focus, with booths set up by anti-human trafficking organizations and the Freedom Wall, where attendees can read true stories from local survivors. Families and people of all ages are invited to come support this event. A $10 donation is suggested, and all proceeds will go to benefit Generate Hope’s programs.

Generate Hope’s Director of Organizational Development, Susan Munsey, comments, “It is through our collective effort and attention that we, as a community, can take the crucial steps to prevention, awareness, and healing.”
