New Smyrna Beach, FL – Florida voters overwhelmingly showed their unhappiness with fiscal policy in Washington, DC by passing an advisory referendum by a 3 to 1 margin calling for an amendment to the U.S. Constitution requiring a balanced federal budget without raising taxes. That’s the assessment of the Vote on Taxes Committee, which also called Florida’s vote “the latest sign of a national movement for constitutional protections against Federal profligacy.”

Florida voters were asked the following question: “In order to stop the uncontrolled growth of our national debt and prevent excessive borrowing by the Federal Government, which threatens our economy and national security, should the United States Constitution be amended to require a balanced federal budget without raising taxes?” Floridians voted 72%-28% in favor.

David Biddulph, Co-founder of the Vote on Taxes Committee, noted the similarities in the Florida referendum with his organization’s own proposed Vote on Taxes Amendment (VOTA), which requires voter approval for Congress to increase spending faster than population and inflation combined, add new debt, or impose new taxes. The proposed amendment also prohibits unfunded federal mandates upon the states and grants two-thirds of the state legislatures the same power as Congress to propose an identically worded amendment which would be ratified if voter approved in three-quarters of the states.

Biddulph contends that Floridians and Americans from across the political spectrum are rallying to the cause of constitutional fiscal discipline as concerns mount over the growing debt and the inability of the Congress to rein in federal spending.

David Biddulph, Dr. Barry Poulson, Pete Sepp and Senator Wayne Niederhauser, UT, Co-founders of the Vote on Taxes Committee stated, “If enough citizens rise up and demand a Constitutional end to the spending and borrowing spree, the ‘American Dream’ of rising standards of living could be passed on for generations. The Congressional Budget Office projects a quadrupling of real GDP per capita from $40,000 to over $160,000 by 2083 if we slow the growth of spending and eventual payoff of our national debt.”

The Vote on Taxes Committee, (http://www.voteontaxes.org), is a non-partisan political group founded to promote fiscal responsibility by the Federal government through an amendment to the U.S. Constitution requiring voter approval of new taxes, spending and debt.

About Vote on Taxes Committee:
Your "Vote On Taxes" Committee is committed to adding the "Vote On Taxes" amendment to the U.S. Constitution. History has demonstrated that requiring voter approval of new taxes and spending will ensure that future generations of Americans will enjoy significantly higher standards of living than if government continues to tax and spend at will.

The official forecast is for the U.S. to run out of money by 2050 leading to a multi-generational economic decline.

The process of amending our Constitution is difficult, time consuming and needs the broad support of the American people. Never in our history has an amendment been successfully proposed and ratified by state legislatures. But, the founding fathers had the foresight to include a way that the states, without the help of the U.S. Congress, could change the Constitution if there were no other way to preserve the American dream of freedom and expanding economic prosperity.
