"My husband was experiencing a lot of side effects from sugar when I met him," she said. "He lost 65 pounds by eating my Mediterranean diet and cutting out the harmful sugar." She said that sugar creates vitamin and mineral deﬁciencies in the body. "In order for our bodies to digest sugar, our entire immune system pretty much shuts down. Sugar depletes the body of everything nutritious."
Morrissey noted that eating a cookie places the immune system in a compromised state for the next five hours while the body is digesting it. "People have survived on water alone for two months, but on water and sugar alone, they only survive for a week," she said.
Other harmful effects of sugar can be seen in children, said Morrissey, who also is a mother. "Sugar has huge effects on mood. We see this in children, but often don't realize when the same thing is happening to us as adults. Your brain gets very excited when you eat sugar. It gives it a rush, and then you crash to extreme lows. Children often become tired or sluggish."
Her webinar also will stress the hidden sources of sugar in diet. "MSG and sugar go by many names on food labels," Morrissey said.
