First California Married Lesbian Bi-National Couple to Apply for a Green Card
Yamileth Escobar and Maria de los Angeles Dominguez were the first lesbian couple to legally marry in California back in 2008, this Friday they will become one of the first to immigrate a same-sex spouse.
Online, July 26, 2013 (Newswire.com) - Yamileth Escobar and Maria de los Angeles Dominguez created history in 2008 as the first lesbian couple to legally marry in California, after the CA State Supreme allowed same-sex couples to marry via their decision in "In re Marriage Cases". The same-sex couple will once again make history as one of the first married lesbian Latina couples to apply for Legal Permanent Residence (green card) following the Supreme Court's monumental decision earlier this month striking down section 3 of DOMA (Defense of Marriage Act). This historic event marks the first time in this country's 237 years, a bi-national couple has been given the opportunity to immigrate a same-sex spouse. The married couple will be holding a press conference and Q&A at the Los Angeles' Federal Building (located at 300 N Los Angeles St, Los Angeles, CA 90012) on Friday, July 26, 2013 at 10:00 AM. After the press conference the couple will be submitting their application in the Federal Building.
Yamileth and Maria are not only a bi-national lesbian Latina couple (Yamileth, a U.S. Citizen, is of Salvadoran decent while Maria is an immigrant from Mexico), but are also proud same-sex parents struggling to keep their family united knowing that without a green card Maria could be deported at any time. By recognizing same-sex marriages at the Federal tier, the Supreme Court paved the way for gay and lesbian undocumented foreign nationals to come out of the shadows.
