Author Wendy Raven McNair Embarks on a February Book Tour to Celebrate Black History Month, Share the History of African American Literature, and Discuss the Asleep Trilogy, Her Young Adult Fantasy Story

Atlanta, GA (I-Newswire) February 5, 2011 - Phillis Wheatley is considered the mother of African American literature and fantasy author, Wendy Raven McNair, is proud to be part of that tradition. Black History Month is an opportunity for McNair to share her knowledge on Wheatley and other prominent African American authors beginning in colonial times up to current day.

“Phillis Wheatley is pretty well known but people like Lucy Terry and Jupiter Hammon composed literature before Wheatley did and Hammon was even published before Wheatley. Still, Wheatley’s writing legacy made her famous during her day on this continent as well as overseas, an incredible feat for a young slave woman. These are the type of amazing facts I share with students because these stories of triumph can inspire everybody. Other prominent figures I discuss include Frederick Douglass and his slave narrative, Martin Luther King and his Letter From Birmingham Jail, the public debate between Booker T. Washington and W. E. B. Du Bois, and the protest novel of Richard Wright during the Civil Rights era.” ~ McNair

In addition to speaking about historical African American authors, McNair also talks about the writing and publishing process, graphic design, and her young adult fantasy trilogy. Books 1 and 2, Asleep and Awake, are available and she’s currently working on book 3, Ascend. McNair recently released a media project bringing a character from Ascend to life on Youtube.

“Clumsy CurlZ is a natural hair guru who shares natural hair care tips and demonstrations on her Youtube channel. I thought it would be fun for my readers to have personal interaction with one of the characters from the trilogy. They can watch her videos and leave comments plus I plan on using the videos to give sneak peeks of what’s happening in Ascend.” ~ McNair

McNair is scheduled to present at Barber Middle school and Northview High school in the Atlanta, Georgia and she also has book signings scheduled at Borders bookstores. She’s also available for speaking engagements outside of the Georgia area as well. Her presentations are suitable for business audiences as well as students and they’re designed to educate as well as inspire.

“I’m amazed by the direction my writing career is taking. I envisioned being cooped up in my room blissfully writing my stories but more and more I’m being called on to speak. And the audiences are steadily growing.” ~ McNair

McNair’s current schedule is outlined below:
Feb 4, Fri – 10:15am – Barber Middle School
Feb 6, Sun – 12 noon – BORDERS (The Avenue 4475 Roswell Rd, Marietta, GA 30062)
