Family Alternatives for Easter Candy

Families spend money and waste calories on Easter candy every year but there are healthy alternatives for Easter candy. These alternatives are both cost effective and fun.

Families should consider using hardboiled eggs instead of eggs stuffed with candy. A large sized hardboiled egg contains 70 calories, 6 grams of protein and 4 grams of fat. It also contains high levels of Vitamin D and other beneficial nutrients. A handful of jellybeans or M & M's does not contain any nutritional value. Candy is simply empty calories.

When it comes to stuffing plastic eggs, families can focus on both fun and functional items. Dental floss may not be "fun" but it sends a healthy message to kids and is certainly functional. Party favors are inexpensive and fun.

"My family has never used candy to stuff Easter eggs. Instead they use money, anywhere from a penny to a dollar. It has always been fun and it keeps it competitive!" says Nikki Grenier, Bootique Fitness bootcamper. Like Nikki's experience, there are other ways to keep it healthy and calorie-free during the egg hunt.

Easter baskets are traditionally stuffed with candy, but can be filled with other fun things. Many kids like bubble bath, lotions, and school supplies. Pencils, erasers, post-it notes, and sugarfree chewing gum are all nice goodies that won't break the bank or the waistline!
