Experts Say Getting Vitamin D the Right Way Is Vital To Health

Too much Vitamin D can increase heart rate and lead to irregular heartbeat say a new report from the American Heart Association.

A recent report from the American Heart Association warns that too much Vitamin D can increase heart rate and lead to irregular heartbeat. The report adds to known complications of excess Vitamin D, which include excessive calcification of bone, kidney stones, calcification of soft tissue, headaches, weakness, nausea, vomiting, constipation, and frequent urination and thirst.

"Some experts recommended limiting sun exposure, but this is probably the worst possible advice," say boomer generation health experts Dian Griesel, Ph.D., and Tom Griesel, authors of the new book TurboCharged: Accelerate Your Fat Burning Metabolism, Get Lean Fast and Leave Diet and Exercise Rules in the Dust (April 2011, BSH) and the newly released, The TurboCharged Mind (January 2012). "Our body's natural way of producing Vitamin D is through adequate exposure to sunlight, which is a critical requirement for optimal health and is the best way to get your quota of this vitamin. There are many food sources that should also be in your diet to ensure optimal levels of Vitamin D, including eggs, liver, hard cheeses, herring, kippers, mackerel, salmon, shrimp and tuna."

"Vitamin D plays a critical role in many bodily functions and studies are constantly growing the list," the Griesels add. "The problem comes down to indiscriminate use of supplements. Without testing, there is no way to know if your current level is optimal, too low or too high. The 'more is better' attitude, or the fear factor, causes people to depend on supplements in an attempt to make up for a poor diet or lifestyle. The 'take vitamins for nutritional insurance' advice is doing us more harm than good. This is most likely responsible for any incidence of excess vitamins, including Vitamin D. It is probably impossible to generate excessive levels of Vitamin D through sun exposure or a diet of natural sources, because, thanks to our evolution, our bodies are equipped to make use of these sources."
