"Everything in Moderation" Is Bad Diet Philosophy, Researchers Say

Even small amounts of soda or slice of chocolate cake might have a bigger effect on your health than you think.

A pair of papers recently published in Cell describe how metabolism and physiology are connected to diet, raising the possibility that even small amounts of occasional indulgences may produce significant changes in gene expression that could negatively impact physiology and health.

The researchers observed how different diets produce differences in gene expression in the roundworm C. elegans, linking the differences to physiological changes. Even very small additions in diet produced obvious changes in metabolism and physiology. They identified at least 87 changes in gene expression between two diets with many changes resulting from just minute changes or additions to the diet. These changes were independent of gene expression programs typically active in nutritional control.

"'Everything in moderation' is a commonly used directive for life," say boomer generation health experts Dian Griesel, Ph.D., and Tom Griesel, authors of the books TurboCharged: Accelerate Your Fat Burning Metabolism, Get Lean Fast and Leave Diet and Exercise Rules in the Dust (April 2011, BSH) and The TurboCharged Mind (January 2012, BSH). "However, this approach can become an excuse to eat anything you want. If you believe that a little of anything is okay, you may want to re-evaluate your thinking."

"Based on these new studies, even small amounts of soda or slice of chocolate cake might have a bigger effect on your health than you think," adds Tom. "Everything you eat or drink will have an effect on your metabolism, physiology and health no matter how small or insignificant the amount may seem. There are no neutral foods or safe amounts of sub-optimal or poor food choices. Everything you eat or drink has a very real effect on your health."
