Mr. Guthrie was a guest speaker for the semester long class that allows high school students to get a fundamental education in law and the basic everyday ways it interacts in the lives of people. The curriculum teaches out of the "Street Law" textbook that many other schools in the Charleston, SC area learn from in similar classes. Attorney Guthrie spoke about his experiences as a lawyer including how he got there through high school, college, and law school, the bar exam, and other hurdles, what a typical day is like for a lawyer and what kind of tasks are involved in a law career, how attorneys interact with clients and the general public, how lawyers get compensated for their work and what the average salary is for an attorney, some of the most important skills that lawyers need that can be learned by high school students, and the best parts and greatest challenges about the legal profession.

This was the third time that Mr. Guthrie visited Hanahan High School, part of the Berkeley County School system. Attorney Guthrie was joined in his presentation to the class by his law clerk, Kimaya Brown, then a senior at Charleston Southern University. Miss Brown spoke and answered questions about her life as a pre-law college student. Mr. Guthrie enjoyed his time spent speaking to the students at Hanahan High and looks forward to coming back again in the future for another visit.
