Online, January 5, 2014 (Newswire.com) - California and Arizona public health officials report that valley fever, a potentially deadly and often-disabling fungal disease, is infecting an increasing number of residents and winter snowbird visitors because the warming climate and continuing drought in the western states have spread desert airborne dust that contain valley fever mold spores into the highly populated Phoenix, Mesa, Tucson, and southern California cities and towns, according to EnviroFry mold expert Phillip Fry, whose company does toxic mold inspection, testing, and decontamination of homes and commercial buildings in the region and nationwide.
The Centers for Disease Control project that at least 150,000 valley fever infections go undiagnosed and untreated annually because valley fever is difficult to detect and the ignorance of the mold disease by victims and their physicians.
The fever often causes mild to severe flu-like symptoms, and in about half the infections, the fungus -- named Coccidioides -- results in no symptoms. But it is common that valley fever can cause permanent medical problems and disabilities, as well as death if the infection spreads from the lungs to the brain, bones, skin, and eyes. Hundreds of residents and snowbirds have already been killed and thousands permanently-impaired medically by contracting the fungal disease.
