Elle Febbo and RIF SoCal.; Hand in Hand for Underpriveledged Youth

Best-selling children's author Elle Febbo and RIFSoCal join forces to provide free, age appropriate books to at-risk, underprivileged youth in the greater Los Angeles Area.

RIFSoCal has been promoting literacy since 1972, and motivates children to read by building age appropriate, at-home libraries for under-served children in Greater Los Angeles. Current Director, Carol Henault, says, "With public schools stretched beyond their resources, RIFSocal believes we must join together with the Los Angeles community to help inspire children's passion for reading - the greatest gift we can give them on their personal road to success."

Febbo is the author of the best-seller, 'What Love is A-Z', and appropriately states, "We can't allow any child to go forgotten when it comes to the joy of reading, learning, and immersing themselves in the possibilities." Febbo joined hands last Valentine's Day in a book give-a-way and Author Meet and Greet at the Watts Learning Center where first and second graders received free copies of "What Love Is A-Z" to take home, along with a second book as a gift from RIF SoCal.

Statistics currently show that 61% of low-income families in the U.S. have no books in their homes, 80% of preschool and after-school programs serving low-income populations have no age-appropriate books for their children and a staggering 45% of children ages 3-5 are not read to daily despite the fact that children whose parents read to them become better readers and do better in school. Increasing access to print material is the most successful way to improve the reading achievement of low-income children.

Without the support of the public, corporate sponsorships and collaborative interest, this program would simply not be possible. On April 15, 2011, the FY2011 Budget Finalized, and RIF Excluded, according to RIF.org. RIF says they are continuing their outreach to House and Senate leadership as well as the Administration to underscore the critical impact the loss of the federal contract will have on children and families nationwide.
