Eighty Percent of Heart Disease Is Preventable, Say Mayo Clinic Researchers
Researchers agree, never too late to make healthy and positive diet and lifestyle changes.
WASHINGTON, CT and NEW YORK, NY (I-Newswire) February 20, 2013 - Eighty percent of heart disease is preventable, according to research by three Mayo Clinic cardiologists and reported by UPI on January 31. The research was conducted by Drs. Martha Grogan, Virend Somers and Randal Thomas.
According to Dr. Thomas, a 53-year-old male smoker with high blood pressure has a 20 percent chance of having a heart attack over the next 10 years. If he stops smoking, his risk drops to 10 percent, and if he takes medication to control high blood pressure, it falls to five percent. Heart disease is still the number one killer of both men and women in the U.S.
According to the researchers, a sedentary lifestyle and long periods of sitting might increase the risk of heart attack as much as smoking, so they suggest moving an extra 10 minutes each day. They also suggest people make an effort to get up from their desks often at work, and walk around their houses when they are talking on the phone. According to Dr. Grogan, moving even 10 minutes a day for someone who has been sedentary may reduce the risk for heart disease by 50 percent.
