Eighty Percent of Heart Disease Is Preventable, Say Mayo Clinic Researchers

Researchers agree, never too late to make healthy and positive diet and lifestyle changes.

Eighty percent of heart disease is preventable, according to research by three Mayo Clinic cardiologists and reported by UPI on January 31. The research was conducted by Drs. Martha Grogan, Virend Somers and Randal Thomas.

According to Dr. Thomas, a 53-year-old male smoker with high blood pressure has a 20 percent chance of having a heart attack over the next 10 years. If he stops smoking, his risk drops to 10 percent, and if he takes medication to control high blood pressure, it falls to five percent. Heart disease is still the number one killer of both men and women in the U.S.

According to the researchers, a sedentary lifestyle and long periods of sitting might increase the risk of heart attack as much as smoking, so they suggest moving an extra 10 minutes each day. They also suggest people make an effort to get up from their desks often at work, and walk around their houses when they are talking on the phone. According to Dr. Grogan, moving even 10 minutes a day for someone who has been sedentary may reduce the risk for heart disease by 50 percent.

"Researchers agree that it is never too late to make healthy and positive diet and lifestyle changes," say boomer generation health experts Dian Griesel, Ph.D., and Tom Griesel, authors of the books TurboCharged: Accelerate Your Fat Burning Metabolism, Get Lean Fast and Leave Diet and Exercise Rules in the Dust (April 2011, BSH) and The TurboCharged Mind (January 2012, BSH). "If you or one of your friends or loved ones are currently at increased risk and struggling to make the needed changes, there are many simple actions that will greatly improve well-being and health."
