Education Center Celebrates One Year Anniversary as the Need for Helping Children with Learning Disabilities Grows

New report shows that ADHD diagnoses have increased by 25% over the last decade—a disability Academics Plus is all too familiar with

Atlanta, Georgia (I-Newswire) January 28, 2013 - It’s a startling statistic. Thirty-five percent of children with learning disabilities drop out of high school. This is twice the rate of students without learning disabilities, according to the National Longitudinal Transition Study.

Seeing a growing need to help children who struggle with learning due to autism, ADHD, ADD and dyslexia, executive director Katie Cyphers created Academics Plus. “There is no greater joy than a child running into the office and wanting to tell you about a good grade or a compliment they received from their teacher,” stated Cyphers. Today many of the education center’s students drive as far away as 30 to 40 miles to receive its services.

Academics Plus integrates the latest neuroscience research into its teaching methods in an effort to increase cognitive abilities and improve academic success. “We are not a tutoring facility. We focus on the root of the problem and work to correct it,” stated Cyphers. “We believe that once the cognitive processes are primed, the academic abilities will improve as well.”

With the demand for the center’s services growing, Academics Plus now works closely with schools such as Cumberland Academy of Georgia in Atlanta. “Each morning, two team members from Academics Plus work with 15 students the school selected for our Brainjogging program,” stated Cyphers. “Working with students with learning disabilities is one of the most rewarding jobs in the world; however, it is not always the easiest. This profession takes a great deal of patience, enthusiasm and positivity. Our team demonstrates compassion and determination to create teachable students.”

The center also offers a day school program for parents seeking an alternative educational solution for their children. The program begins promptly at 9 a.m. and lasts until 1 p.m. “The program gives parents another educational option for their children to support and foster their success,” stated Cyphers. “We are constantly getting referrals from previous clients, pediatricians, psychologists and educators.”

While Academics Plus typically sees students ranging from ages 4 to 13, it’s open to servicing a variety of age groups and has the ability to modify its curriculum to support the needs of each and every student. For team members, helping people in the community improve their ability to learn is more than just a job—it’s a pleasure they each take pride in. At Academics Plus, clients are not just a number. They’re family.
