Dw Dunphy Debuts New Song “Mr. Burning Suit”
Track to be featured on forthcoming album The Radial Night.
New Jersey (I-Newswire) September 23, 2012 - For musician Dw Dunphy, the path to the song “Mr. Burning Suit” was not the one he had expected. “I was probably half-asleep when the image of the man in a suit that was on fire, and waving away people who wanted to help put the flames out, came to me,” Dunphy said. “I remember in this dream-state that he kept saying this was the only way anyone would pay attention to him.”
In the late-winter of 2011, Dunphy was experiencing hard times of his own: unemployed, prospects thin, and his abilities to go after new opportunities severely hampered, the writer/musician from Red Bank, New Jersey admitted to bouts of despair. “It wasn’t until later that I had heard of the story of Tarek al-Tayeb Mohamed Bouazizi,” a Tunisian street vendor who, after another round of harassment from the powers that be, protested in an act of self-immolation – setting himself on fire. That act of defiance ultimately led to the Arab Spring of protest and upheaval in the Mid-East. Dunphy is quick to state that his song is not about that event. “However,” he noted, “in a world that is so connected and holds so many options by which to be heard, it is extremely upsetting that it takes such an act like setting yourself on fire to get the modern digital world to wake up from its stupor.”
The song appears on the forthcoming album The Radial Night, a collection of tracks that Dunphy proudly calls a concept album. “Just about every tune deals with coping with patterns, loops, or cyclical behaviors,” Dunphy said. “I think ‘Mr. Burning Suit’ fits in because even with all our advancement, this kind of willful ignorance until something drastic happens is an almost classic textbook situation. We have been living in that ignorant loop for a very long time.”
The Radial Night is slated to debut in November, 2012. Dunphy marks the album as his first with vocals since 2009’s Enigmatic. “You sing when you have something to say,” he cryptically said of the post-Enigmatic releases, all instrumental.
