(I-Newswire) November 16, 2009 - Dougherty’s Pharmacy, a trusted neighborhood institution in North Texas, is hosting a Pet Awareness event for customers on Thursday, November 19 from 2:00-5:00 p.m. Dougherty’s is joining forces with the SPCA of Texas to raise awareness about the veterinary medicinal services it provides, as well as the SPCA of Texas’ Compassion Connection program which brings animal therapy to hospitals and nursing homes in Dallas and Collin County.
Representatives from both Dougherty’s and the SPCA of Texas will be at the event to answer questions about their respective services and answer any general pet health or training questions. WRR Classical 101.1 FM will broadcast live from 3-5 p.m. The pharmacy is located at Preston Road and Royal Lane in Dallas.
“At Dougherty’s, we’re dedicated to providing the highest level of pharmaceutical expertise – whether we’re dispensing a prescription or compounding a medicine for a child, elderly person or an animal in need,” says Jim Potter, General Manager of Dougherty’s Pharmacy. “While many people are aware of the breadth and depth of product and service Dougherty’s provides for human customers, many don’t know that we offer the same level of service to our furry or feathered friends. This event will go a long way in raising awareness about our capabilities, as well as the valuable programs the SPCA offers to area families.”
The SPCA of Texas’ Compassion Connection program uses animal therapy in the form of animal-assisted activities to hospitals, nursing homes, retirement centers, rehabilitation centers and social service organizations across Dallas. The program is designed to enhance the mental, physical and emotional well-being of the individuals that these organizations serve by affording them the opportunity to spend quality time with trained SPCA of Texas volunteers and their pets.
“The value of animals in promoting healing and growth is becoming increasingly recognized among professional care providers, clinical practitioners and educators,” Gina Parker, Vice President of Community and Corporate Affairs, SPCA of Texas. “Our four-footed ‘therapists’ have elicited nearly miraculous responses from deeply troubled or abused children, physically traumatized hospital patients and even those who are terminally ill. We’re excited that Dougherty’s is giving us a great opportunity to get the word out about The Compassion Connection.”
