Diabetes Less Likely in Obese People Who Undergo Bariatric Surgery Compared to Traditional Care
Swedish study follows participants for 10 years, finds incidence of diabetes was significantly lower in the surgery group.
Washington Depot, CT (I-Newswire) October 10, 2012 - A recent study in Sweden found that 78 percent fewer obese people developed diabetes if they had bariatric surgery rather than traditional care to try to slim down. Several studies have shown that obesity surgery can reverse diabetes in some patients; this study aimed at seeing if it was possible to prevent diabetes in the first place among people who were obese. After tracking participants for 10 years, the incidence of diabetes was significantly lower in the surgery group.
The study has renewed debate over the use of adjustable bands and other bariatric procedures. Some doctors find the results interesting but note the cost and impracticality of mass operations; others, mostly surgeons who specialize in these procedures or consult for the manufacturers, are hailing it as a viable solution to the obesity/diabetes epidemic.
“Almost 26 million Americans have Type 2 diabetes brought on by obesity,” say boomer generation health experts Dian Griesel, Ph.D., and Tom Griesel, authors of the new books TurboCharged: Accelerate Your Fat Burning Metabolism, Get Lean Fast and Leave Diet and Exercise Rules in the Dust (April 2011, BSH) and The TurboCharged Mind (January 2012, BSH). “A quick look at the math tells us immediately that bariatric surgery would be a very expensive solution to implement on a wide scale.”
“Why are traditional diet and lifestyle advice for the obese and diabetics ineffective when compared to the surgical options?” asks Dian. “The short answer is bad information and advice. Traditional diet and exercise advice is wrong, particularly when it comes to diabetics. Certain other diet and lifestyle programs can prevent or cure diabetes. Obesity, diabetes and other chronic conditions are preventable.”
