Developers Predict Massive Increase in Storage Demand
Eighty Percent Predict Storage Demands to Increase - with 36% Predicting the Increase will be Off-Site
Online, September 20, 2013 (Newswire.com) - Eighty percent of developers working with Big Data expect their need for storage to increase during the next 12 months, according to Evans Data's newly released Data and Advanced Analytics Survey 2013, an in-depth survey of over 440 developers actively working with databases and analytics. Of those expecting an increase, 36% expect the new storage to be accommodated off-site in the Cloud. A third of the developers in the survey expect their company's overall data stores to increase by 75% or more in the next 12 months.
The survey, completed in August 2013, covers a wide range of topics related to data, analytics, and storage and it clearly depicts the evolution towards Big Data solutions. Sixty-seven percent of the developers surveyed cited 1 petabyte or more as the threshold for switching from traditional database solutions to Big Data solutions, with 36% selecting a size between 1 petabyte and 1 exabyte as the threshold. Size of data and number of transactions were cited far more commonly than the nature of the data's structure.
"Big Data is really providing excitement in the industry as companies begin to realize the treasure they have for R&D, marketing and analytics", said Janel Garvin, CEO of Evans Data Corp. "But while Big Data has the potential to provide amazing advancements in those areas, it's currently mostly found in IT departments where its nascent influence is being nurtured by developers and the IT staff that usually funds Big Data projects."
While developers are split over whether the data will be stored on-site or in the Cloud, two-thirds agree that the typical structure of data or analytics projects must be integrated into an enterprise-wide data warehouse, and not segregated from other data projects.
