Current Weather Images Plus Airport Directory Enhance Pre-Flight Briefings For Pilots

(I-Newswire) July 31, 2009 - The FAA-based airport directory at AirportView.net now includes current weather images to increase the accuracy of pre-flight weather briefings. The images, updated every minute, show current ground and sky conditions at airports. Weather conditions invisible to satellites and radar are immediately apparent in the camera images.

Pilots flying under Visual Flight Rules (VFR) must have minimum visibility to take off or land. Ground fog and light mist will not register on radar or satellite images. "Weather cameras show ground fog that satellites cannot," said Jerry Stooksbury, general manager of Avionics Specialists, LLC. If an airport does not have an AWOS with a visibility sensor and does have weather cameras, pilots can see the visibility directly.

The airport directory organizes facility information on tabs. The wx tab, short for weather, displays thumbnail images from the weather cameras, nearby AWOS and current weather from the nearest station. AWOS stands for Automated Weather Observation Station.

Avionics Specialists, LLC operates a network of weather cameras and displays the current weather images on its web site, AirportView.net. Each installation contains multiple cameras pointed at the sky. The server collects fresh images from each camera every minute.

The web site provides camera viewers that can show the current image or time-lapse sequences of one, two or four hours in length. A movie of the entire day is also available for each camera. Movies remain online for a full week.

AirportView.net provides a collection of services for pilots. The site includes current weather images, an AWOS directory, an airport directory, a used avionics store, plus articles about flying and avionics.
