Resort offers unique 'Coral Frame Sponsorship Programme' for conservation-minded guests

The delicate coral ecosystems of The Maldives are to benefit from a new sponsorship programme at Cocoa Island by COMO - the luxury Maldives resort in the South Malй Atoll from COMO Hotels and Resorts.

The 'Coral Frame Sponsorship Programme' offers Cocoa Island guests the opportunity to help protect corals around the resort and support the development of Maldivian corals across the country.

Through an innovative technique engineered by Seamarc, a marine consultancy company based in Malй, new corals are propagated in metal frames via a transplantation process using fragments of broken corals that have been harvested from the natural reef. These coral fragments are attached to the metal frames and grow into new colonies - with discernible differences within two months of the initial two or three weeks following the transplant.

When guests of Cocoa Island sponsor a coral frame, they receive personalised images of the new corals every six months, enabling them to monitor progress. On their next visit to Cocoa Island, they will also be taken on a guided snorkel to see their sponsored frame up close. The scheme is also open to non-guests, who can sponsor a frame and monitor its progress online.

Cocoa Island by COMO is an intimate private island resort with 33 overwater suites offering direct access to an exceptional house reef, making it popular with diving and snorkelling guests. Other lures include holistic wellness treatments at the COMO Shambhala Retreat, as well as the resort's South Indian-inspired cuisine.

Coral frame sponsorship costs US$150.00 for a single frame, US$300.00 for couple frames and US$500.00 for family frames. Proceeds from every frame go toward an Environment Fund to support Cocoa Island's Maldives Marine Conservation research programmes and local community initiatives.
