University Students Train in Medieval Combat to Prepare For Development of Indie Game

San Francisco (I-Newswire) June 24, 2011 - Project Ethereal, an independent game development team from Carnegie Mellon University, today announced the upcoming Beta for their first game, Ethereal – Medieval Skirmish Warfare. Originally a student-pitched project at Carnegie Mellon University, Ethereal – Medieval Skirmish Warfare combines medieval fighting techniques with unique online game design to evoke emergent behavior similar to Counter-Strike. The Beta version of the game is scheduled for release on FilePlanet on June 30, with the final version coming later in the summer.

“The first thing we did was train in medieval combat techniques with the Society for Creative Anachronism to learn how fighters handled swords, pikes, shields and armor,” said Mark Piszczor from Project Ethereal. “Eventually, we participated in large-scale combat reenactments in order to experience first hand the chaos of a medieval battle. That experience influenced nearly every decision we made in the development process.”

Ethereal – Medieval Skirmish Warfare is a medieval combat action game that takes the traditional round-based combat game style and replaces guns and Kevlar with swords and armor. The game combines offensive weapons and defensive armor strategy in a fast-paced gameplay founded in real medieval combat techniques to create an experience of presence on the medieval frontlines. The key to survival on this battlefield will be cooperation and teamwork. With four levels of immediate replayability, Ethereal aims to entertain hardcore gamers interested in gritty, high-action gameplay and physical combat.

About Project Ethereal:
Ethereal - Medieval Skirmish Warfare is a medieval action game that started as an idea some of us had as graduate students at Carnegie Mellon's Entertainment Technology Center. As fans of the medieval era and the game Counter Strike, we wondered if we could combine the two.

In beginning pre-production, we discovered we really didn't know much about medieval fighting--only what we'd seen in movies, games, and a few books. So, we joined up with the Society for Creative Anachronism (SCA) and trained in medieval combat with their members. Once deemed battle-worthy, we attended Pennsic, an annual "war" event where attendance reaches upwards to 12,000 people participating in large-scale melee battles, tournaments, archery, stage performances, and other medieval events.

We were there for the battle, and for our fight we constructed a shield camera to help us capture the "feel" of the combat. We've tried to translate that feeling into our game.

Most of us left our former lives to attend school and pursue dreams of game development. Our goal has always been to ship a game and hopefully make a little money too (maybe even enough to pay back our student loans!). But with that said, we started this as students, and so we want to make our game free to college students. We hope you're entertained by the culmination of a very long journey.
