San Mateo (I-Newswire) December 10, 2011 - Caminar, a nonprofit agency providing community based support for people with mental illness and disabilities, announced today the election of Karen McCown to its Board of Directors.
“We are pleased to announce the expansion of Caminar’s Board of Directors to include Ms. McCown, which will add to the diverse talents of our current board. Her professional expertise, interest and related experience in nonprofits are welcomed and appreciated as we continue to develop our programs and services. We look forward to her involvement to help further the mission of Caminar in our efforts to serve individuals with mental illness and disabilities," speaking on behalf of the entire Board, Caminar Board President John Clinton stated.
Ms. McCown is recognized as an educational pioneer who founded the Nueva School in Hillsborough in 1967, where she published Self-Science, her visionary emotional intelligence curriculum. She is dedicated to continuing her legacy with the founding of Synapse which she hopes will become a model for future schools. In planning the school she met with educators, political and business leaders and Nobel Laureates to consider the educational needs of our society. She saw that the central foundation of a school should be not simply giving students knowledge, but giving them the opportunity to develop wisdom. Her commitment is reflected by her active involvement on campus. She is the chair and co-founder of Six Seconds, a non-profit that offers training and materials on emotional intelligence. Ms. McCown has presented at several symposia and conferences and has served on a broad range of trustee and advisory boards for social, emotional, and mental health issues.
Ms. McCown, a resident of Portola Valley, is married to George McCown cofounder and managing director of McCown De Leeuw & Company, Menlo Park and New York City. In 1981, she was named Educator of the Year by the California Association of the Gifted. She attended Stanford University, and earned a master’s degree at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst.
“We are delighted to welcome such an accomplished and dedicated business and community leader, such as Ms. McCown, who has offered to join Caminar’s Board of Directors especially at this time in our 47 year history of serving individuals with disabilities” states Chip Huggins, Caminar CEO. “Caminar has been actively recruiting new board members throughout the past couple years to add various talents and perspective to our agency’s executive leadership as we increase our efforts to publicize our programs and services and expand our resources. We are honored by their commitment to Caminar.”
