Call For Entries: Flying Elephants Short Story Prize

Call for entries to a new writing contest, the Flying Elephants Short Story Prize in honor of the debut edition of online arts and literary magazine, AndWeWereHungry.

New York (I-Newswire) January 18, 2013 - AndWeWereHungry, a new online arts and literary magazine is delighted to invite entries to its Flying Elephants Short Story Prize, in honor of its debut issue. Four winning writers will share a prize fund of $5000 and enjoy publication in the magazine’s debut online issue in the Spring of 2013.

The Flying Elephants Short Story Prize is designed to showcase the work of outstanding short story writers of all nationalities, either published or emerging. The contest submission theme (and the literary magazine's debut issue creative prompt) is "And we were hungry. . . .," or more broadly, "HUNGER" for after all haven't we all experienced hunger? And isn't it, in the words of Ray Bradbury, that very "lack that gives us inspiration?" The contest is open to writers who are 18 years of age and older. An author may submit only one entry, which must be an original work of narrative short fiction, previously unpublished and in English. There is no entry fee or word restriction. Submissions are made online only and the deadline is March 31, 2013.

The contest is made possible through the generous sponsorship of renowned artist Gregory Colbert (the artist behind “Ashes and Snow,” the most-attended exhibition by any living artist).

“My dream is to develop and nurture a little corner on the web where fiction, essay and poetry is accompanied by stunning, quirky and memorable visual artwork. For the space to be a tango between art and prose while fostering community,” says the founding editor of the AndWeWereHungry literary magazine, Dana K. Vincent. Ms. Vincent is editor of the book-length creative nonfiction collection, “Haiti on My Mind: Stories by Haitian-American Teens,” and a former editor at Bloomberg Law. A Thomas J. Watson Fellow, she is a graduate of Spelman College, with advanced degrees in economics (New School for Social Research) and law (Georgetown University Law Center). But during it all, she has maintained a love of fiction, storytelling and the arts, and she has long been hungry for an online arts and literary space where art, good writing and ideas that matter will collide while also promoting and publishing powerful new voices and talent. And so, in 2012, with the winds of change blowing in from around a world, she finally took action! AndWeWereHungry, the online arts and literary magazine she founded, is scheduled to launch in Spring 2013.
