Boys & Girls Clubs of Oceanside Partners with the City of Oceanside to Provide Summer Camp for Libby Lake Neighborhood

BGCO and the City of Oceanside address the need in the Libby Lake Community to ensure at-risk elementary students have a safe and enriching environment throughout the summer.

Oceanside, California (I-Newswire) July 30, 2013 - (Oceanside) The Boys & Girls Clubs of Oceanside is thrilled to work with the City of Oceanside to give at-risk youth in the Libby Lake neighborhood the opportunity to attend summer camp. This is the first time we have been able to create a free summer program with the help of the City of Oceanside in effort to give Libby Lake youth a positive place to go. The families in this area are taking full advantage of our summer program, as all 60 spots allocated for youth are filled and they see over 98% daily attendance.

We are providing the exact same curriculum at Libby Lake as our Townsite Clubhouse and Martin Luther King Middle School location. This includes, STEM, (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) project based learning, and all students get to attend our weekly field trips for a hands-on experience. For example, in our Space Odyssey themed camp kids learned about rockets and in groups of 3-5 created their own rockets with recyclable materials, at the end of the week they attended the NASA Museum. The youth attending are primarily Spanish speakers; therefore our staff consistently works on literacy skills through reading aloud and testing comprehension.

We have heard encouraging feedback from both our youth and families attending the programs Monday -Friday, 8:30am-2:30pm. Instead of sitting home unsupervised, students are excited to come to a fun, productive environment at the BGCO. It is crucial these kids are kept off the street and given the chance to go somewhere with positive role models and engaging activities. The Club is eager to enhance our relationship with the City of Oceanside as we work together to make a positive difference in the lives of Oceanside youth.
