Boomer's Obesity Sets Stage for Health Declines

The poll also found that half of obese boomers say they are regularly exercising; many say they get some aerobic exercise, but only 25% said they get the recommended 4-5 sessions or 2.5 hours per week.

A recent poll concluded that almost 70% of baby boomers are either overweight or obese, a higher rate than other generations. As the 77 million boomers reach retirement age, this could mean a massive strain on Medicare. The poll also found that half of obese boomers say they are regularly exercising; many say they get some aerobic exercise, but only 25% said they get the recommended 4-5 sessions or 2.5 hours per week. Only 63% reported doing any form of strength training-critical for maintaining lean body mass.

"The boomers said that cancer and memory loss were their biggest health fears, but considering that excess weight and obesity are known risk factors for heart disease, diabetes and other metabolic disorders, they should be more concerned with reducing excess fat," says boomer generation health experts Dian Griesel, Ph.D., and Tom Griesel, authors of the new books TurboCharged: Accelerate Your Fat Burning Metabolism, Get Lean Fast and Leave Diet and Exercise Rules in the Dust (April 2011, BSH) and The TurboCharged Mind (January 2012, BSH).

"Even those who aren't obese need to do more to maintain optimal weight and fitness," say the Griesels. "Loss of bone and muscle mass as we age is common and affects our health and mobility. The good news was that walking was cited as their most frequent form of exercise. As we emphasize in TurboCharged, when combined with proper diet, walking is the best fat-burning exercise. The benefits add up when walking is combined with more general activity."

The Griesels noted that 60% of the boomers polled said they are dieting. They are also eating more fruits and vegetables and/or cutting cholesterol and salt, but poll results indicate their efforts are not producing the desired results.

"The status quo isn't working. TurboCharged offers a simple and effective lifestyle solution that anyone and everyone can easily incorporate to achieve ideal body composition, increased energy and mobility and optimal health," they add.
