Norwich (I-Newswire) September 19, 2012 -
To cope with the high demand for their wildlife volunteering expedition to Namibia, Biosphere Expeditions have this week announced additional dates for 2012.
Biosphere Expeditions is an international not-for-profit organisation which co-ordinates regular wildlife conservation projects where volunteers from around the globe can take part – giving them the opportunity to see parts of the world they might not otherwise be able to while giving something back.
Their project in Namibia is one of their longest-running and every year sends groups of volunteers to Africa to assist local scientists and local conservation activity.
The aim of this expedition is to provide local game ranchers with information on the behaviours of predators such as leopards and cheetahs in the local area so that they can better protect their livestock.
Leopards and cheetahs are both in the IUCN red list, only approximately 12,400 are thought to exist on the African plains and the leopard appears in the ‘Near Threatened’ category. Data gathered by the project in Namibia helps the game ranchers to avoid their livestock coming into contact with these predators not only so that their animals aren’t attacked, but also so that they do not have to resort to drastic measures which contribute to the diminishing numbers of leopards and cheetahs.
Earlier this year the team at Biosphere Expeditions also added another study species to their project in Namibia – the elephant. African elephants appear on the IUCN’s red list under the Vulnerable heading. In Namibia, they are a nuisance to game ranchers as they trample plants that their livestock would otherwise graze on.
The new expedition dates will run from 18th – 30th November and anyone interested is encouraged to sign-up as soon as possible because spaces are limited.
