Beta-Carotene Derivatives Can Block Effectiveness of Vitamin A, Study Suggests
Many known and still unknown compounds found in whole natural food are good for you when consumed as part of a balanced diet, but may be toxic when isolated into supplement form.
Washington Depot, CT (I-Newswire) July 9, 2012 - Researchers at Ohio State University recently announced that certain molecule derivatives of beta-carotene, the orange pigment found in vegetables such as carrots and sweet potatoes, can have an adverse effect on the body by blocking various actions of vitamin A. Beta-carotene is the primary dietary source of vitamin A, which is critical to human vision, bone and skin health, metabolism and immune function.
“Isolating compounds that are found to be beneficial when consumed via natural foods may have unknown harmful effects when taken as supplements,” say boomer generation health experts Dian Griesel, Ph.D., and Tom Griesel, authors of the new books TurboCharged: Accelerate Your Fat Burning Metabolism, Get Lean Fast and Leave Diet and Exercise Rules in the Dust (April 2011, BSH) and
The TurboCharged Mind (January 2012, BSH).
“This is not the first time beta-carotene supplementation has been found to cause problems,” add the Griesels. “It’s much healthier to obtain all your nutrients from whole, natural foods and leave all the supplements on the store shelf. If you refuse to make healthy diet and lifestyle choices, supplements are unlikely to make up the difference or even be of any benefit. In fact, they may end up having unanticipated and adverse effects which will leave you worse off. Many known and still unknown compounds found in whole natural food are good for you when consumed as part of a balanced diet, but may be toxic when isolated into supplement form. Spend your money on the best whole, natural, unprocessed foods you can find and your body will thank you for it with better health.”
