Paget (I-Newswire) July 11, 2011 - The local charity, Bermuda Cancer and Health Centre has announced the winner of its 2011 Health Care Education Scholarship. Due to the strong interest from qualified applicants, the charity is pleased to have also provided an additional one-time grant of $10,000 to a second deserving student. These two recipients have been rewarded for their commitment to pursuing a career in health care and for the potential impact their careers will have upon returning to Bermuda.

"These awards reflect our commitment to supporting academic and career excellence in the next generation of healthcare," says Larry Dennis, Chairman of the Bermuda Cancer and Health Centre Scholarship Committee and a member of the Charity’s Board. “Both of these students demonstrate the potential for a bright future in healthcare, and we are pleased to be able to support the local medical community by helping to develop their talent.”

LeRhonda Mills has been awarded a $10,000 scholarship. LeRhonda is a graduate of Saltus Grammar School and has been working for the Bermuda Hospitals Board while continuing her education at Bermuda College and Delaware Technical College. Two family cancer diagnoses have prompted her to consider cancer care nursing or possibly Oncology as a future goal. A single mother, LeRhonda has found a balance in order to pursue her education and raise her child while continuing to find time to volunteer, to work with the elderly in a nursing home and to assist with dialysis patients. She will be attending Delaware State University in the fall where she plans to pursue her Bachelor of Science in Nursing.

Erek Fox has been awarded a $10,000 grant for this year. Having already attained a Bachelor of Kinesiology degree, he is now pursuing his goal of becoming a doctor specializing in internal medicine and rehabilitation. Among other volunteer positions, he has given his time both locally and abroad working with physically and mentally challenged children. Erek will be attending the Caribbean Medical University in the fall where he plans to major in Medical Sciences.

“Although the scholarship programme’s main goal is to assist Bermudian students in a wide range of health care studies, Bermuda Cancer and Health Centre encourages individuals interested in a health care career to consider the medical imaging field. There are a number of areas in which we would like to see Bermudians become qualified, such as ultrasound technology, mammography and bone densitometry” says Deborah Titterton Narraway, the Centre’s Marketing Coordinator.

Bermuda Cancer and Health Centre’s Scholarship is available annually to assist Bermudian students interested in a career in the health care field. Recipients of this scholarship will be awarded up to $15,000 annually towards education and tuition costs at an accredited college or university abroad. The scholarship will be given for a maximum of 4 years and will be subject to the applicant’s receipt of satisfactory grades at the end of each academic year. Applicants must also demonstrate financial need. To find out more about this scholarship please email scholarship@chc.bm.
