Tom Wessel Construction Corp. demolished a 55,000-square-foot building and removed debris from the old HealthSouth Rehabilitation Hospital, which sat vacant on the site for several years.

“Having this building removed and the site cleaned should be a welcome sight to the neighbors,” said Tom Wessel, President of the construction firm based in Sarasota for more than 20 years.

The new community, Autumn of Sarasota, is set to break ground in the first quarter of 2013 with an expected cost of over $65 million once all phases are completed. Phase I will open in 2014 and will include 80 memory care residences. Community leaders have pointed out that the new campus will add to the rejuvenation of an area that is becoming a vibrant, thriving neighborhood.
