Art Zine Shines Spotlight on Underground Artists
Underground art publication, Surface Area, aims to call attention to lesser-known artists in a black-and-white print zine. The zine is a joint effort by the New York-based organization Robots Will Kill and Indianapolis-based PEEL Magazine.
Indianapolis (I-Newswire) January 29, 2013 - Surface Area Zine highlights a variety of artists and genres of art from studio artists to graphic designers, and also includes graffiti and street art. The first issue of Surface Area sold out in a matter of weeks, and the second issue is currently on sale online and in stores.
Surface Area Zine grew out of a desire to see lesser-known artists get more publicity and have their work seen in print. The artists featured in Surface Area are talented and hard-working, but are often overlooked by some of the more prominent art publications. Chris Chillemi of Robots Will Kill and Dave Combs of PEEL Magazine began working together in 2003 when Robots Will Kill was featured in PEEL and the two have been friends ever since. "Chris is one of the hardest working and most talented artists I know. It's a pleasure to be working with him.", says Combs.
The first issue of Surface Area featured Ryan Robidoux (Evoker), Michael Banks (Sugarfueled), Matthew Hoffman (You Are Beautiful, Hey It's Matthew), Peat Wollaeger, and Amara Por Dios. The second issue features KA & MTK76, Cake, Greg the Mayor Andrews, Burn353, and Brian Butler (Upper Hand Art). Both issues also feature additional graffiti and street art.
Surface Area Zine is focused on showcasing emerging and "undiscovered" artists. The zine comes polybagged with stickers sent in by artists from around the world. It is available online and at retailers such as Newbury Comics, Rotofugi, Mighty Tanaka, Reading Frenzy, and other stores. The cover price is $5.
