Arabic Women’s News Site Relaunch Follows the Arab Spring

Women’s eNews is relaunching its Arabic sister site this week with seven days of breaking content from the Middle East region to be published on the English and Arabic language sites.

New York (I-Newswire) July 21, 2011 - In light of what has become known as the Arab spring and women's clear role in it, Arabic Women’s eNews is relaunching the newly branded and redesigned site to provide a dynamic space for reporting and discussion of women’s issues in the Middle East and North Africa region and Arab speaking communities around the world.

"Arabic Women's eNews connects, informs and inspires its readers through stories that underscore the critical and transformative role that Arab women play in all sectors of society, sharing their trials and triumphs with a worldwide audience," said Dominique Soguel, managing editor of the Arabic site who led the design team.

The new Arabic Women’s eNews will provide in depth and investigative reporting on women’s issues in Arab states, including government reform and women-led campaigns for greater economic, legal and political opportunities.

The launch edition offers a selection of articles that take readers through the dilemmas of single Sudanese mothers in Egypt, the success of a woman-run coffee shop in Ramallah, the struggle of Syrian women amid a fierce government crackdown on dissent, and Egyptian women's campaign for civil marriage.

The Arabic Women’s eNews relaunch brings a change of name and logo. The site's name transitions from a plain transliteration ومينز إي نيوز to its own identity as أخبار المرأة . The logo puts a modern twist on Arabic calligraphy, turning the word ‘woman’ into the recognizable “W” of the English language logo -- the creative coup of Amman-based company Insight, which executed the site's new look and structure.

Women’s eNews launched the Arabic language version of its news service in 2002 in response to a report on Women's Rights and the Arab Media that found the Arab media ignored women's concerns by and large, reinforced stereotypes and were without women in management positions and championed access to online media as a way to counteract that.

Women's eNews will continue to drive the majority of the coverage on both sites with reporting translated into English and Arabic. Arabic Women’s eNews will publish one story a week by an Arabic author in his or her mother tongue to be translated into English and run on the English language Women’s eNews site.
