According to their website, the Marty Lyons Foundation was established in 1982 to fulfill the special wishes of children chronologically aged three (3) and seventeen (17) years old, who have been diagnosed as having a terminal or life threatening illness, by providing and arranging special wish requests. The organization was founded by Marty Lyons, a professional football player who befriended and became a surrogate father to a three-year-old boy suffering from an advanced illness. Three years after their relationship began, Marty’s young friend passed away and the child’s passing profoundly affected Marty’s attitude towards life, fame and his fellow human beings. With encouragement and assistance from family and friends, Marty established his foundation dedicated to granting wishes of seriously ill children. Thirty years later, Marty’s Foundation continues its work. To date, the foundation has successfully granted wishes for trips to Disney, to meet celebrities, computer systems, a swimming pool filled with spring water, a shopping spree, special renovations to allow children to live at home with their families and many more.
