Annual Cost of Obesity Is $300 Billion, Experts Estimate
The Congressional Budget Office predicts that obesity-related spending will increase an average of 3.6% a year on a per-person basis.
Washington Depot, CT (I-Newswire) June 18, 2012 - A report conducted in March by a consortium of health experts known as the Campaign to End Obesity, estimated that the annual cost of obesity is $300 billion. Obesity is a risk factor for most modern chronic diseases and is ultimately responsible for almost 10% of all medical expenses. The Congressional Budget Office predicts that obesity-related spending will increase an average of 3.6% a year on a per-person basis, while the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that over 33% of American adults are overweight, another 33% are obese and another 6% are extremely obese.
“This study points out that the health-related problems associated with this ‘weighty’ situation will not be completely realized for 20 to 30 years, when the associated complications become obvious,” say boomer generation health experts Dian Griesel, Ph.D., and Tom Griesel, authors of the new books TurboCharged: Accelerate Your Fat Burning Metabolism, Get Lean Fast and Leave Diet and Exercise Rules in the Dust (April 2011, BSH) and
The TurboCharged Mind (January 2012, BSH). “The policy makers here in the U.S. use 10-year projections that only serve to mask the true cost, which—just like compound interest—becomes a compounded cost that will be staggering if not curbed.”
“Out-of-control medical costs have become the biggest obstacle to our long-term economic strength,” say the Griesels. “Despite what experts might say, being overweight or obese is under our control. Better medical insurance is not the answer. In fact, it may give a false sense of security and serve to eliminate personal accountability. It’s your responsibility to maintain your health and well-being. Any diet based around fresh whole foods will get you moving in the right direction.”
