American Age Group Half Marathon Record Holder to Host Meet/Greet and Walk at Oceanside Senior Expo

Record setting senior, Anne Garrett from Oceanside, will host a meet, greet and walk at the Oceanside El Corozon Senior Center at 12:30 pm on Saturday, Oct. 13th. Come early and enjoy the expo whch begins at 10 AM.

Oceanside, CA (I-Newswire) September 11, 2012 - Record setting senior, Anne Garrett from Oceanside, will host a meet, greet and walk at the Oceanside El Corozon Senior Center at 12:30 pm on Saturday, Oct. 13th. Come early and enjoy the expo whch begins at 10 AM. Walkers who are interested in taking a half mile walk around the senior center site and then pick up some tips on maintaining a healthy active lifestyle, can meet Anne at the Move Your Feet Before You Eat! Foundation booth in the expo.

On her 78th birthday, Anne Garrett from Oceanside, CA, crossed the finish line of the 2012 Surf City USA Half Marathon, coming in first in her age group with a 2:08:33 time and a pace of 9:49 per mile, catapulting her into the top 1% of runners in the country based on age-graded percentages.

“I did my last half marathon in January of 2010. It took a long time to recover and I said I’d never run another half. When I realized Surf City was being held on my birthday this year, I decided to sign up for it. I wasn’t sure how I would hold up for this one, but I was very pleased when I finished in the time I did. I felt better this year than I did two years ago,” said Garrett.

Garrett is no stranger to record setting. Last April, she came in first for the 75-79 division at the Carlsbad 5000. Her time was 25:59, shattering the national record for a 5K in her age group by 13 seconds.

Anne has race in every O’side Turkey Trot since 2006. Anne’s time at the 2012 O’side Turkey Trot was 25:09, which would have been an age group record, except that the trot course has a downhill slant to it making the course ineligible for setting records.
An active child growing up in a small village in Northern Ireland, Garrett always maintained a slight build. It wasn’t until age 60 that she began pursuing race walking as a sport and entering running events as a race walker. Twelve years later, she decided to pick up the pace while walking the Surf City USA Half Marathon and surprised herself when she ran the rest of the race with a finishing time of two hours, five minutes and 36 seconds. At 72 years old, she had become a runner and has since competed in countless races.

In 2011, Garrett became the spokesperson for the Move Your Feet Before You Eat! Foundation, a Carlsbad nonprofit dedicated to health and fitness, targeting childhood obesity via education and fitness programs. Garrett currently speaks at schools and senior centers throughout North County to inspire both Grandchildren and Grandparents to lead healthy active lifestyles..

“I want them to know they can still be out there enjoying life when they’re my age and older. I tell them of the wonderful friends I have made running and walking, and how much better I feel mentally and physically,” said Garrett. “The Foundation gives me a chance to show everyone you’re never too old to have fun.”
