Abbie Clips The Competition To Make Her Mark During Fashion Week

Sunshine Coast Fashion week unearthed a new talent this month, with local hairdressing student Abbie Williams proving she could cut it with best, working with international stylists to create some show stopping looks on the runway.

Sunshine Coast (I-Newswire) September 20, 2012 - Sunshine Coast TAFE student Abbie Williams is more determined than ever to launch her hairdressing career after landing a spot amongst some of Australia’s top stylists at the Sunshine Coast International Fashion Week earlier this month.

The budding hairdresser, who is due to graduate in less than nine weeks, worked alongside some of the biggest names in the industry to primp, pin and prep hair for three back to back fashion shows.

The event celebrated the culmination of fashion week at Novotel Twin Waters, showcasing the talents of local and international designers and required over 20 hairdressers for more than 12 hours to perfect the runway looks.

‘‘It was scary, stressful and incredibly hard, but I was working alongside fantastic hairdressers from around the country, plus I even got to style the face of International Fashion Week, so it was one of the best days of my life,’’ Abbie said.

Never one to shy away from hard work she said she jumped at the chance to get involved in the annual event, which is now in its fifth consecutive year.

‘‘When Bernie Craven, the Director of Aussie Hair Guru approached our class for volunteers I ran up and nominated myself before anyone else had the chance,” she said.

‘‘Hairdressing is hard work, if you want to succeed you need to put 100% effort in and that’s why I decided to complete my Certificate III in Hairdressing and by the end of this year I will have had experiences I could only get from this course.”

Hairdressing teacher Sharan Berry agreed the course gave students the chance to work with industry professionals and get the hands on experience they need.

‘‘We offer a range of courses for apprentices, mature age students and everyone in between and encourage anyone considering a career in hairdressing to try our one day short course so they can get a feel for what it’s like to work in a salon.,” Ms Williams said.

‘‘We’re currently running a short course from now until December designed to give participants an insight of how hairdressing operates, trial styling and grooming techniques and get inspiration from current students at the same time.

Miss Williams said she was also excited to show of her skills to short course participants and that she’d never been happier with her decision to take up the profession.

‘‘Hairdressing is a skill for life and you can do it anywhere in the world, meaning you’ll always have a job, and besides all that it’s fun if you’re creative,’’ she said.
