A lot of today’s convenience foods contain high levels of sugar – sometimes labeled as “high fructose corn syrup.” This additive is a synthetic (read: fake) form of sugar. It does not give us sustainable energy and in fact, it gives us a quick boost of energy and then a really big let down. And the more we eat, the more we crave that sugary substance. Before you buy something, take a look at its ingredient list. Added sugars come in a variety of different terms. The most common added sugars are called sucrose, glucose, fructose, and dextrose. And anything with “syrup” at the end can be guaranteed to be not the healthier choice of the day. Instead, go for an all-natural juice or sodas made with real sugar. These can be found in your health food isle and will give you that sugar craving fix without filling your body with laboratory invented fake sugars.

Read the Ingredient and Nutritional Content Labels
Of course, first you will have to learn what the terms mean. Go online and look up information on what it is you are actually eating. If you get in the habit of reading labels, you will be an informed consumer who can begin making good food choices from day one. Plus, ingredients that aren’t healthy come in a variety of terms. The two biggest culprits to anybody’s diet is salt, sugar, and fats. Foods with saturated fat or “trans fat” can raise your cholesterol. Fat isn’t bad for us – in fact is helps our brains function properly. But trans fat is never good…the kind of fat found in greasy fast food and snack items.
